Teacher charged with sex crimes makes first court appearance

A 55-year-old former physical education teacher arrested last month on two counts of indecent liberties with a child has made his first appearance in court. The Wichita, Kansas, man is accused in the probable cause affidavit of inappropriately touching a 14-year-old girl at Mayberry Middle School.

The girl reported the man's alleged abuse to her counselor at the school. The school's principal was notified and spoke with the teacher in January. The teacher reportedly told the principal that he had only hugged her and that the allegation was not true. The principal had the student write out a statement about what had happened.

The alleged victim's statement, according to the affidavit, said that the teacher touched her bottom after he had hugged for quite some time. She allegedly tried to pull away from the man. After that, the alleged victim said that in July of last year, the man began to call and text her every day. In addition, on one occasion during the summer last year, she was sitting in the teacher's car and he allegedly started rubbing her inner thigh. When she moved her leg away, he stopped. The former teacher allegedly told the girl that if she was older, the two would get married.

The man's bond was set at $75,000, which has been posted and he has been released. As a condition of his bond, the judge ordered the former teacher not have any contact with any child under the age of 18, and signed a protective order, which prohibits him from any contact at all with the alleged victim.
